This weekend I had the opportunity to review a story I hadn't visited in a while. You know how it is when you know you've heard something before but it's like you are hearing it for the first time? Well, that's how I felt when I read about Madam CJ Walker.
Imagine growing up as a sharecropper's child, having to maybe attend school a couple weeks out of a year, losing your mother early in life, and then losing your father later. Imagine having to work in those fields, in the blazing heat, beside your parents for food or merely pennies at a time. It's hard to imagine right? Now add the fact that the harshness of the heat and dirt started taking your hair.
In this day and time, we are so very fortunate, well at least I know I am. I recognize that although I don't have everything I want, I have exactly what I need 99 percent of the time. Even the 1 percent I don't have, eventually shows up. I am ashamed to admit but still I find myself often wishing I could be any where but in the present. Now I'm thinking, "if you don't like your present, change your thinking because those thoughts lead to tomorrow's present."
I'm sure Madam CJ Walker had those moments too. However, she used her need to lead her to her solution and ultimately to a solution for millions of people. Oh, did I mention she was illiterate?
Really.
She didn't wallow in self pity about the condition of her hair or skin. In fact, her hair challenges eventually became her claim to fame. Ms Walker new that if she saw a need for proper hair products then there were others with the same need.
So, now what's my excuse for not building that empire? I have none.
I am ready and driven to level up in my business, MAXIMIZE my impact, INCREASE my influence and, of course, MAKE MONEY while doing what I love.
After I turned 44, I had my second child (I'm 48 now). My first one was born when I was 21. So, of course I was two completely different people both times. Well, the second birth, I was not only a new mother but I was also a grandmother (my first daughter had a son). My whole way of interacting with children took a 180 degree turn. I wanted my child and grandchild to be brilliant or at least be afforded the opportunity.
I was always passionate about learning but my passion is now a burning fire. Most importantly, I saw the need to reach girls of color. We all need an advocate who represents us. So, I created Nya's Project, a STEM-A preschool curriculum, in order to ensure that not only my young kids stay abreast but your kids also remain current with the world's educational changes and how those changes shape them for the future.
